They will be controlling a diminishing pot of money and they will need to work with the local voluntary sector to get best value for money. Could you provide the commissioning guidance and advice they will need to get local solutions to local problems? ‘Local’ in this context might sometimes be sub-regional, of course.

I’m struck by your comment at the end:

“Can the VCS create alliances and collaborations? Julia Unwin, CEO of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation talks about finding surprising friends, in her lecture ‘A Recipe for Social Change’. To do this we have to put aside differences and work together.”

I couldn’t agree more. I’m struck that my Facebook feed is full of friends saying “who are these people who voted UKIP/Tory? I don’t know any of them.” This just highlights the divisions we’ve set up…… and we might be very surprised about who voted UIKP anyway. We need to break down the barriers and talk to people who are not like us….. we all have a lot to learn.

In addition, as the election was looming I spoke to a few friends who were willing to admit that some of the messages on UKIP flyers actually resonated with them – perhaps these were the same messages that resonated with those who voted for them! We are maybe not as far apart as we imagine or like to think.

Comment on Creating our own future: what opportunities for the voluntary sector in 2015? by David http://www.involveyorkshirehumber.org.uk/blog/creating-our-own-future-what-opportunities-for-the-voluntary-sector-in-2015/#comment-6248 Wed, 06 May 2015 13:43:23 +0000 http://www.involveyorkshirehumber.org.uk/blog/?p=464#comment-6248 For me, a big challenge for the sector is how to regain its identity as innovators, campaigners, partners and responders (to community articulated need). My fear is that the move away from grant aid coupled with severe austerity has put the sector at war with itself. Obsessive competitive tendering has left many organisations behind and there is a growth in what are virtually quasi-public sector charities skilled at winning contracts but increasingly remote from the communities they claim to serve. Infrastructure support is a major casualty denying communities expertise in funding and responding to need and robbing the public sector planning process of properly resourced and experienced partners and community representation.
