David lost his heavy goods vehicle licence in 2007 when he suffered a series of heart attacks. The treatment he received during his recovery led him to apply for a voluntary position with Accord, a community membership body that has been set up by the North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus.
David needed IT skills to do his voluntary work, and he enrolled at Grimsby Learning Shop. From never having switched on a computer, David quickly achieved his foundation level course and by July 2009 he had completed his full Level 2 Diploma in IT.
David was recently asked to deliver a Powerpoint presentation to a large number of people, about his experiences with the health service, and was able to do so confidently. David is also able to help his granddaughter with her homework!
Yorkshire & Humber Adult Learners' Week is coordinated by Involve Yorkshire & Humber. Adult Learners' Week Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the life-changing learning done by people in communities all over Yorkshire and Humber, and the central role of the voluntary and community sector in supporting learning.
