Graham Newberry left school with no qualifications at the age of 15 and worked in the army and in factories. He was made redundant and referred to the Local Learning Zone in Bradford to improve his employability skills. Aged 50 Graham gained his first formal qualifications, Level 2 literacy and numeracy, and an NVQ in ICT. More importantly, he discovered a passion for supporting others with their learning.
Graham enrolled on a Certficate in Education course through Sheffield Hallam University leading to Associate Teacher Learning and Skills (ATLS) status. He set up Saturday workshops with his fellow students in order to succeed with his studies.
His nominator says ‘There is every expectation that Graham will successfully complete his course by July 2011 and become a valued member of the teaching profession. His success in higher level learning from a non-traditional background is inspirational to learners. A course tutor commented 'I don’t think I have ever taught anyone who has worked so hard or travelled so far.'
Yorkshire & Humber Adult Learners' Week is coordinated by Involve Yorkshire & Humber. Adult Learners' Week Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the life-changing learning done by people in communities all over Yorkshire and Humber, and the central role of the voluntary and community sector in supporting learning.
