Before having a stroke at the age of 50 in 2009, Julie ran a sandwich bar, played, umpired and ran a ladies’ netball team and provided support for her grandchildren and family members.
Following the stroke, Julie experiences speech and language difficulties, memory problems, and has partial paralysis in her left side. In January 2010 Julie joined the Grimsby branch of the Stroke Association and started coming to the communications group at Second Avenue Resource Centre. She started with a computer class, as despite having used a computer before her stroke she had to relearn every skill.
Julie achieved her Entry Level 2 Award in just 3 months. She has returned to business life, making the produce for sale at the sandwich bar and using her computer skills to design menus. She recently completed a three mile sponsored walk across the Humber Bridge, and is well on the way to achieving her Entry Level 3 award in ICT.
Her tutor says 'Julie is an inspiration to all who meet her, taking each day in her stride.'
Yorkshire & Humber Adult Learners' Week is coordinated by Involve Yorkshire & Humber. Adult Learners' Week Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the life-changing learning done by people in communities all over Yorkshire and Humber, and the central role of the voluntary and community sector in supporting learning.
'Julie is an inspiration to all who meet her, taking each day in her stride.'
